Featured Web Site – National Fast Pitch Coaches Association
-----------------------------------------------

http://www.nfca.org

The idea for a softball coaching association first developed from discussions at the National Collegiate Women’s Softball Championships in the early 1980’s, with Judy Martino of the University of North Carolina credited with the initial thought. Collegiate coaches wanted awards programs, a forum to discuss issues affecting their sport, a means to better educate coaches and update them on softball-related actions, and representation of the group’s views in organizations such as the NCAA and ASA.

Shortly thereafter in April of 1983, the National Softball Coaches Association (NSCA) was founded.

Today, the NFCA has grown from 40 members in 1983, to over 4,200 members in November of 2003. Revenues exceed $1,000,000 a year, and the NFCA has a full-time staff of eight people. Major programs run by the NFCA include awards programs (All-American, coaching staff of the year, victory club, scholar-athlete and top 10 academic teams), a national convention, recruiting camps, Leadoff Classic tournaments for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college, and USA Today coaches polls for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and high school. The NFCA’s newspaper, Fast pitch Delivery, has become one of the nation’s best softball publications, and its website, Home Plate on the World Wide Web (www.nfca.org), is one of the fastest-growing softball-oriented sites in the country.

A new major initiative of the association is its National Fast Pitch Coaches College, which gives coaches in-depth training in all aspects of the game.

New Kiosk added to Hall of Fame
-----------------------------------------------

The newest information kiosk in the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame is devoted to the ASA umpire programs. Information is included about the National Indicator Fraternity (NIF), Medals program, Elite umpires, International Softball Federation (ISF) certified umpires, Hall of Fame umpires and ASA national championship umpires since 1994. Visitors can search by association, category, divisions or by an alphabetical list of all umpire names.

Former Director of Umpires Merle Butler (1981-2004) worked hard to have this kiosk added to the ASA Hall of Fame in order to recognize all individuals who have achieved a "little bit more" during their careers as an ASA Umpire.

Butler states, "Over 7,000 umpires are listed and more will be added as they are approved. This is 10% of the umpire registration totals since these programs were instigated. Each umpire listed has been approved for either the Medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze or Blue levels); the NIF Award; achieved "Elite" status - the highest honor for an active or inactive ASA umpire in Fast Pitch, Slow Pitch, or Modified Pitch competition; induction into the ASA Hall of Fame; or has been certified by the ISF. Several names listed are approved for more than one of the above."

In addition to the umpires who have reached each of these award levels, a listing of national championship umpires is included.

Pictures have been requested for each umpire to include in this display. If you recognize an umpire and do not see a picture by his/her name, please have the umpire forward a passport size photo to the ASA Umpire Program so it can be included.

Future kiosks will list all members of the local association Halls of Fame, past ASA national champions and ASA All-Americans.
