Bernard "Bernie" Berman
Monroe, NY

  • Umpired his first softball game in 1943, while serving in the Armed Forces.

  • He joined the ASA in 1968 as a registered umpire and has been active ever since.

  • He has served as President of the Orange County ASA Umpires Association for the past 20 years, and has increased their membership from 8 umpires to well over 100.

  • Bernie was appointed NYS Umpire-in-Chief in 1984, and through Bernie's hard work, New York State has achieved their highest registration to date.

  • He worked as an umpire for many District, State and Regional Tournaments. And was selected to officiate in three ASA National Tournaments.

  • In 1985, Bernie was selected to officiate in the Maccabiah Softball Games in Tel Aviv, Israel.

  • In 1986, Bernie was inducted as a Charter Member into the ASA National Indicator Fraternity and his name is engraved on a plaque in the hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

  • He was chosen the ASA Umpire-in-Chief for the Tel Aviv games in 1989.

  • In April 1989, Bernie acted as host for the National ASA Umpires Development School, held in Middletown, New York. Also in 1989, during the National Umpire-in-Chief clinic in Oklahoma, Bernie was awarded a 20-year pin by National Umpire-in-Chief Merle Butler.

  • Bernie was one of the first inductees into the Neal Tuflet Hall of Fame/Honor.

  • In addition to his umpiring, Bernie is also a duly licensed American Kennel Club Dog Judge, and a certified New York State Swim Judge.
