Nicholas "Blackie" Calcagino

Syracuse, NY


  • Nick was one of the top officials in Central New York. At 70 years of age, he was also one of the oldest active umpires in New York State. Nick officiated for over 50 years of his life.

  • Blackie officiated in many District and State Tournaments and umpired in the first Fast Pitch Regional Tournament held in Central New York.

  • In 1985, Blackie officiated in the Air National Guard national Tournament held in Syracuse, NY.

  • In his career, Blackie was chosen to officiate in every District, State, and Regional Tourney held in the Syracuse area. He also worked in at least two National Invitational Tournaments.

  • Many times Blackie would travel to and from different tournaments to relieve umpires who might need a rest.

  • He was one of the best fastpitch officials and when slow pitch came to the area, he became one of the best slow pitch officials in the district.

  • Nick, also assisted in developing new areas for the ASA, and was always ready to help the local commissioner where ever needed. His experience and knowledge of the game proved invaluable.

  • Nick often donated his time for worthy causes, such as Muscular Dystrophy, The American Lung Society, and Easter Seals, and many other causes.

  • In the last ten years, Blackie has spent the winter months in Florida, and while on vacation, has officiated games there.
