Joe Costine

· In his early days Joe was a catcher with the Amenia H.S. Baseball Team, but it was more as a non-player in softball that he made his mark.

· Joe was credited with bringing amateur softball to Dutchess County over three decades ago.

· In 1958 Joe was Vice President of the Pok. Downtown Softball League.

· In the early 1960’s Joe was manager of the Queen Car Wash Softball Team, which was the first team in the area to win an ASA District Title.

· In 1964 Joe organized the Red White’s Team, later known as The Pough. Brewers.

· From 1965 til 1968 he served as Hudson Valley and Westchester, District Commissioner.

· In 1972 he was named New York State Commissioner, a position he held until he retired in 1979.

· In 1977 and 1978 he was ASA Mid Atlantic Regional Vice-President.

· Joe was a tireless worker toward developing NYS A.S.A. programs. Some of his achievements include the NYS Commissioners Code, team classification, tournament procedures, umpire state code, and a New York State Newspaper.

· Joe spent 18 years with ASA, including 10 years overall as commissioner and 7 years as state commissioner.

· One of Joe’s dreams was the formation of a New York State Hall of Fame, which our present commissioner, Mr. Fran Mott has put into place.

· Joe helped organize the Dutchess County Softball Hall of Fame, of which he is a charter member.

· Joe passed away due to a tragic car accident in 1980.
