ASA Membership Director/Craig Cress

-----------------------------------------------

Craig Cress, Membership Services Director spoke at the National Convention about the change in direction his position will be taking in the near future. Three positions will now answer directly to him.

Previously there had been a number of positions with somewhat equal responsibility at the ASA National Office, with each being responsible to the Executive Director.

ASA had a Director of Umpires, a Junior Olympic Supervisor and a Building and Grounds Administrator; each having different duties on the National Office level. While the titles have changed and responsibilities might be slightly different, our service from these newly appointed staff members should improve.

Meghan Douglas is now the Assistant to the Membership Director handling teams & championships.

The position of Associate to the Membership Director has taken the place of Director of Umpires. Kevin Ryan will serve in that position, replacing the recently retired Merle Butler. Incidentally, the Bi-Annual U-I-C is February 4, 5, 6, 2005 in Oklahoma City. A “retirement party” is being planned for Merle Butler to coincide with the event.

Finally, Chris Sebring will be in charge of Stadium Events at the Hall of Fame Stadium.

Craig added that he is looking to work together as a team with the new staff.

Various Speaker Messages

-----------------------------------------------

After hearing Ron Radigonda, Executive Director, E.T. Colvin our President and Craig Cress, the Director of Memberships Services speak at the convention, a few other secondary staff members made brief presentations.

1. Ronnie Isham, National Teams Director showed two videos. Promotional video #1 was basically Olympic highlights. Video #2 was a T.V. editorial about bringing the Olympic tour to an area in 2008. As of this writing, I have not heard about the availability of these videos.

2. Mike Candrea, Olympic Team Coach, spoke next. He gave a very good talk about the Olympic experience and players. Additionally, he spoke briefly about the loss of his wife to a brain aneurysm during the team’s training tour.

3. Pete Turner, Jr., Men’s Team Coach spoke about the accomplishments of our adult men’s fast pitch team. The travels and individual players were mentioned.

4. Tim Lyon, our Junior Men’s Coach spoke about the hardships of getting players of the high school and college age to compete in softball while still playing baseball. He noted many new recruits to the teams that are currently playing in or are schedule to attend college.

Welcome to the world of Trump Softball

-----------------------------------------------

Trump Softballs, a division of Anaconda Sports, was officially started in May 1986. John Stote III, the inventor of Trump Softball, is an avid softball fan and former player. Like many players, he would often dissect softballs trying to get to the core of the performance. Many weekends were spent hitting softballs, then literally cutting them open on a table saw. After all his hard work and calloused hands, he had yet to find the perfect softball. Striving to never give up, he started his own brand; Trump.

Why should I attend an ASA National Umpire School?
The purpose of the ASA National Umpire School is to develop each student's individual talents and skills as an umpire. Because of your interest, we realize that you have the pride and attitude it takes to become one of the best softball umpires in the nation. Our goal is to bring out the best in your talent and ability.

Uniformity
We also want to prepare you to go back to your home area and pass on to your fellow umpires the mechanics, positioning and procedures learned in the school. The goal of the National Umpire Schools is to have maximum uniformity in our umpiring mechanics throughout the world. This can only be attained by participants like yourself attending these schools and sharing the experience, knowledge and expertise with the umpires in your area.

What should I expect from an ASA National Umpire School?
Each ASA National Umpire School is run by a team of no less than three National Umpire Staff members. Each member is an experienced instructor with a boundless knowledge of all aspects of the game of softball. With a ratio of at least one clinician per 25 students, each participant will be receiving hands-on personal instruction throughout the school. You will be expected to participate in all field drills, therefore, you should report to the school in good physical condition. This is not an observation type school.

Dress
You will be expected to wear your official ASA umpire uniform to the school including navy blue slacks, base cap, black base shoes and an ASA jacket or sweater in case of cold weather. Bring your mask. We will hopefully have pitching machines available for drills. You will be given a school shirt with your registration material which should be worn both days. In case of inclement weather and the class moves indoors, gym shoes must be worn.

Hotel and Transportation
When your application is accepted, you will be notified of the school housing headquarters and facilities. Each participant is responsible for his/her own housing and transportation.

Cancellation Refunds
No refunds can be made unless a replacement is found for the school. Should the applicant find a replacement, notification must be made to the school coordinator immediately so the appropriate changes may be processed. If there is a waiting list, a replacement can be taken from the list.

Agenda
In the event of inclement weather requiring the staff to conduct the school indoors, adjustments in the schedule may be necessary. All materials will be covered as outlined in the drills and original schedule.

Arrival/Hospitality Room/Registration & Check In
A hospitality room will be available on Friday or Saturday evening so the participants can meet the instructors. Registration check in will open Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. prior to the first class session.

General Information
Upon receipt of your application and the registration fee ($75) the application will be reviewed and accepted, provided there are openings in the school. If there are no openings, you will be notified and placed on the waiting list for that school.

Registration Procedure
All registration should be sent to the school coordinator listed below. DO NOT SEND TO THE NATIONAL OFFICE. All correspondence regarding the school, motel, classroom and fields will be forwarded by the coordinator upon receipt of your registration. Any questions should be directed to the school coordinator.
