![]() The 2005 season was a very good year for New York State Amateur Softball Association. One of our teams, the Mohawk Valley Mystics, won an ASA National Championship. They competed in the Girl’s 16 and Under B Fast Pitch Championship in LaGrange, Georgia, going 5-0. Congratulations to the Mystics! Many of our registered teams participated in local, invitational, state and regional play, with a decreasing number attending ASA National Championships. Our youth program continues to excel, not only with increased participation but with talented teams that are able to compete with those from the traditionally strong West and South. Our umpire program is one of the best in the country. As is typical, many NYSASA umpires were selected to work in National Championships. Most received quality evaluations. Umpires are needed to assist our program as it continues grow in New York State. On the national level, this past November, Ron Radigonda, Executive Director of ASA projected a surplus budget for 2005 and a balanced budget for 2006. Our individual registrations would be over 200,000. Some budget positives are: 1) Increased individual registrations. 2) World Cup was a financial gain for ASA. 3) The J.O. Gold held in Oklahoma City had an impact on the budget. 4) ASA Properties (in its 10 year) had positive numbers as well. Some budget concerns: 1) Inflation. 2) Energy costs and 3) International Olympic Committee votes regarding softball in the Olympics. Goals for 2006 include an increase in individual registrations, more ACE Program involvement, more support of our sponsors and an increase in adult championship play. We receive many questions regarding insurance coverage. Bollinger Insurance has asked all commissioners to refer coverage and policy questions to them (see their add in the NYS ASA Handbook or at www.bollingerasa.com. One of the most common questions we receive is: Why does my team need both Liability and accident Insurance? The answer from Bollinger is: Because you will then cover the two major exposures that threaten softball teams and leagues: 1) Lawsuits from injured spectators and players; and 2) Medical Expenses that result from injuries to players on your team. The ASA has grown from a few hundred teams in the early days to over 250,000 teams today, representing a membership of more than four million. We know you have a choice when it comes to what league you will play in and we a happy you selected New York State ASA.
