Commissioner Workshop Paying Dividends

-----------------------------------------------

Bill Plummer

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Although only held once a year, the ASA Commissioner Workshop is fast becoming one of the most important meetings on the ASA calendar. It’s because of the turnover in commissioners. Eight new commissioners have been named in the past two years with seven this year.
The commissioner workshop couldn’t have come at a better time for the new commissioners with the opening of the season only a couple of months away.
The workshop is also valuable for the veteran commissioners who can exchange their ideas and thoughts with fellow commissioners and find out what is working or not working in those parts of the country.
Each commissioner received a commissioner workshop binder that was
filled with invaluable information that was put together by members of the national office staff, and heard various presentations from members of the national office staff (Craig Cress, Kelly McKeown, Megian Douglas and Ron Radigonda) as well as the ASA president, E.T. Colvin, ASA President- Elect, D. Stephen Monson, and John Spiotta of Bollinger Insurance, which has been involved with the ASA 42 years.
Spiotta, who has been involved with ASA since 1982, told the commissioners that they can now register baseball teams, which will have the same insurance benefits as ASA softball teams. He also stressed the importance and benefits of individual registration.
ASA went to JO individual registration in 1997 (73,000) and the total continues to increase. In 2003 it topped 100,000 and in 2004, 138,018 individuals were registered in the JO program.
Forty-nine of the 88 local associations utilized JO individual registration in 2004 with Texas (13,713), Central California (11,889), Northern California (10,778) and Southern California (8,713) the top four local associations.
It is projected that in 2005 JO individual registrations will top the 180,000 total. The workshop concluded before noon on Sunday, with a question and answer session and closing remarks by ASA President E.T. Colvin.
Following the workshop, the national office received e-mail and phone calls from those attending praising the workshop.
‘‘I felt that the workshop was very educational, especially for the new commissioners,” said James Ellis of Tennessee, a new commissioner. ‘‘It gave us more of an insight to items in the Code as well as additional in-depth information pertaining to other items such as insurance, individual registration and other programs. It also was a valuable time for networking with other commissioners.”
Joe Sproul, Kansas commissioner and Mid America vice president, said all of the commissioners in the region agreed the workshop was the best one “they had been to.”
Sixty-seven commissioners attended the workshop with nine others sending proxies. “I think this was one of the best commissioner workshops,” said ASA President E.T. Colvin. ‘‘The interaction between the commissioners was good. Anytime we have the benefit to exchange ideas open dialog to discuss softball it’s benefit to ASA.
Over a third of our commissioners have 10 years or less experience. Meetings like this are very important in the education process of our people.”

NEWS AND TRENDS – baseball insurance

-----------------------------------------------

At our state meeting we discussed the availability of team insurance for baseball teams. The question arose regarding adult teams as well as youth baseball teams. The response for Bollinger Insurance is: Both adults and JO can purchase the coverage for their baseball teams as long as they are ASA registered.
