NYSASA Receives National Coverage – Inside Pitch

-----------------------------------------------

New York State ASA received coverage in the latest edition of Inside Pitch, the National Office on-line newsletter. An article was put together by Bill Plummer with the help of Bill Doxsey. Bracket Books – Rule Books

-----------------------------------------------

Bracket books are available to those ASA Commissioners that would like one. These are “three game guarantee” brackets. Please let me know if you did not receive one at the spring meeting or if you need another.

Any extra rule books can be sent to me as soon as possible. Currently, I have 7 remaining and prefer not to order additional books from the National Office if there are some available out there. Let me know if you plan on sending some to me. NYSASA will reimburse you for shipping. Remember, after July 1 – it’s too late to return rule books.

ASA Altered Equipment Rule Reminder

In response to many questions from the softball community about heating, cooling and other devices used to alter equipment, the Amateur Softball Association would like to remind all players, coaches, parents, tournament directors and umpires of the notation contained in Rule 3, Section 7 of the ASA’s 2005 Official Rules of Softball:

Rule 3, Section 7

Note: The characteristics of any approved equipment can not be changed. One example would be icing, cooling or heating equipment.

The ASA considers these devices illegal. Furthermore, anyone caught doing this may be subject to Article 510, M, 06 of the ASA Code that states the following:

Article 510, M, 06

Any player discovered using an altered bat, including a doctored bat or a bat with additional weight shall be called out and disqualified from further tournament competition for a minimum of one year. ASA shall have the right to take possession of a bat that is, in the sole discretion of the Tournament Committee, reasonably suspected to be an altered bat. In the event the suspected altered bat is tested and determined to be an altered bat, then the player shall surrender ownership of the altered bat to ASA; otherwise the bat shall be returned to the player. A team that is discovered to have within its possession or control an altered bat may be disqualified from further tournament competition.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today the creation of the 2005 International Sports Invitational featuring the sports of basketball, softball and volleyball. WORLD CUP OF SOFTBALL

-----------------------------------------------

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- From July 14-18, the World’s best softball team’s will convene in Oklahoma City for the first ever World Cup of Softball. Highlighted by the three-time Olympic gold medal winning USA Softball Women’s National Team, the event brings a re-match of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games with the likes of silver medalist Australia and bronze medalist Japan. 1996 Olympic silver medalist China and the Canadian National team complete the field of five teams set for battle in the nation’s softball capital.

“This event is going to be incredible,” said three-time gold medalist Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.) “By bringing in the world’s top teams, the competition is the best it can be not to mention the world’s top softball rivalries. Oklahoma City is the perfect stage for this type of event and with ESPN on board, it’s going to be a world class atmosphere.”

Announced today by the Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, the World Cup is a round robin format with a page playoff system similar to the Olympic Games. The scheduled USA games will be broadcasted on ESPN and ESPN2 with tape delay and LIVE feeds.

“Softball has been a ratings winner for our networks and we couldn’t be more pleased than to feature the USA Softball Women’s National Team in one of the biggest events of the year” said Carol Stiff, ESPN’s Director of Programming & Acquisitions.

“With the success of Team USA and softball in the Oklahoma City area, we feel this event is a perfect fit,” said ASA/USA Softball Executive Director Ron Radigonda. “Much like the Women’s College World Series that’s contested every season at ASA’s Hall of Fame Complex, the World Cup will bring a national following of fans to Oklahoma City. We couldn’t be happier than to contest this inaugural event in our own backyard. Both the national and local media have been very receptive to the events creation and we are confident that softball fans throughout the United States will flock to Oklahoma City to support all of the countries.”
