Ted Petrillo
Utica, NY

  • Ted started playing softball in 1937 with Geno's in Utica, NY. They won the City Championship five straight years from 1937-1941, including an undefeated season of 36 wins, no losses.

  • In 1942, Ted organized the Utica District Softball Umpires Association with a member ship of nine individuals. They were independent until 1963, when they became an ASA organization. Ted was Commissioner of that group from 1942-1978 (except for 2 years).

  • In 1963, Ted introduced slow pitch softball to the Utica area, forming the first league of eight teams. This same league is still in existence as the Utica Muny League, now composed of 110 teams.

  • In his first three years as Commissioner, Ted doubled his team registrations each year. He was also the first to bring ASA tournaments into the Utica area, and was responsible for the first lighted field in Utica.

  • As an umpire, Ted has officiated in approximately 2,500 games. The highlight being a 17 inning game pitched by Hall of Famer "Shifty" Gears. There were a total of over fifty strike-outs in the game.

  • Ted has "worked the plate" in at least 6 New York State Championship games.

  • He served on the committee to organize the New York State ASA code. In 1963, he was appointed District Commissioner for Oneida & Herkimer Counties and served as Deputy State Commissioner for three years.

  • He was New York State Umpire-in-Chief from 1975-1078, and in 1977 he was honored by New York State for 13 years of service.

  • In 1978, Ted retired and was honored by the Utica District Softball Umpires Association for 32 years of service.
